His time as a tennis player at Midland University helped propel James Enzler ’16, into a career as a Division I tennis coach.

James is entering his fourth season as the head women’s tennis coach at Seton Hall University in New Jersey.

He arrived at Midland from Stevensville, Montana to bolster his education, and tennis career. “Midland felt like a second home to me and I thought I would enjoy getting better at tennis while I was there. My continued improvement and knowledge in the sport helped me become a better coach and my degree in education was a benefit as well.”

James has guided Seton Hall to two of its most successful seasons in recent history. The squad had the second most wins as a program in 2025 and has reached the Big East quarterfinals each of the past two years, the first time that has happened in more than 15 years.

Beyond building a career as a coach, he looks back on his time at Midland as one where he forged many lifelong connections. “The friendships I made were incredible. The group of friends I had made every day memorable in one way or another.”

When not busy coaching and recruiting, James likes being active and staying in shape, as well as trying new restaurants and coffee shops.
