Dorothy L. Bauer '66

Dorothy LaVon Bauer of Deshler, formerly Hastings, the daughter of Charles and Viola (Goesch) Herzog was born July 4, 1933, near Edgar. She departed this life Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler at the age of 84 years.

Dorothy was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran in McCool Junction and confirmed at First Lutheran in Davenport. She attended school in Fillmore, York and Clay counties, graduating from Sutton High School with the class of 1950. Following graduation she clerked at Brown’s Store in Sutton, attended Art school, then moved to Axtell to work at Bethphage Mission. In 1956 she moved to Hastings to work as an obstetrics aide at Mary Lanning Hospital. She graduated from Mary Lanning Nursing School as a Professional Registered Nurse in 1962. She continued her education and graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Midland Lutheran College in 1966.

She worked at hospitals in Hastings, Grand Island and Fremont; and as a clinical instructor at the Hastings Regional Center. On July 5, 1966, she married Vernon Bauer of Harvard. They soon moved to a dairy farm north of Grand Island, where they were blessed to raise two children, John and Deanna (Dee). Dorothy was active in nursing organizations, Nebraska Rural Youth, Home Extension groups, church organizations holding various offices, and later held many volunteer positions at Good Samaritan Village where she retired. She was always one for doing the background work. She enjoyed reading, art, and especially time with family and friends. As her health declined she moved to Deshler to live with her daughter and family. She is preceded in death by her parents, son John Bauer and grandchild Lucas Jalas.

She is survived by her daughter Deanna (Dee) Jalas and husband, Darin of Deshler, two grandchildren, Mackenzie and Caleb Jalas of Deshler, many cousins and friends. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Peace Lutheran Church in Hastings at 10 a.m. Officiant will be Pastor Marcus Mackay. No visitation.
