The Nebraska Nurses Association honored scholarship recipients and award winners during the recent Standing on Common Ground Convention. NNA Awards and Member Scholarships serve as recognition tools for nurses who exemplify passion and dedication to the nursing profession.

Clare Schmidt ’58, an Immanuel Nursing alumna, has been a nurse for 58 years. These years have been spent in service to her patients, her profession, and most importantly her faith. In an issue of the Grand Island Independent, Clare quoted, “From the age of six, I wanted to be a nurse,” she said. “My mother taught me this through Jesus, as she saw my gifts from the Lord. She had a heart and compassion to serve in this way, and I wanted to as well.” Schmidt has served not only as a nurse, but also as a missionary through her church. She worked in the CHI Home Health Program for 20 years. After that, she managed the adult day care at the Grand Generation Center for 10 years. Since retirement, Clare continues to volunteer at the Grand Generation Center performing foot clinics, filling in for staff, and assisting wherever she is needed. She also hosts foot clinics in the communities of Grand Island, Cairo, Wood River and Doniphan.

Her NNA nominators shared the following stories:

As I reflect on Clare, I envision Florence Nightingale. Florence had high standards and trained others to uphold them. She also was compassionate and ministered individually with a kind and giving heart. To me, that defines Clare. She has lived her life in service to others and can truly be seen as “the Lady with the Lamp.”

Clare calls all of us to “be the nurse we wish for ourselves or loved ones.” She has a gentle soul and inspires our members to work hard for the good of our profession and those we serve. Clare’s voice is like a hug, and to know her is a blessing.
