Sondra Raasch '69

Sondra RaaschSondra Raasch was born on October 23, 1946 to Cecil and Laila Walker in Milford, Nebraska. After Sondra graduated from Fremont High School in 1964, she went on to study Education at Midland Lutheran College.

After graduating with a teaching degree in English, she started her first job in Grand Island, Nebraska working at a Junior High School. This job kickstarted a career in education where she taught both junior high school and high school English classes. She then finished her career as a high school administrator.

While attending Midland Lutheran College, Sondra met James (Jim) Raasch. They married on December 30th, 1972. Jobs transferred Sondra and Jim to Georgia where Sondra worked at Morrow Junior High School in Morrow, Georgia. She also worked as an English teacher and administrator at Berkmar High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Sondra and Jim went on to have one child, Allison Raasch Mayfield and two grandchildren Daxton (Dax) Mayfield age 17 and Anniston (Annie) Mayfield age 14. The family attended St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Snellville while in Georgia. Sondra also attended St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska later in life.

During the years when she worked, she enjoyed traveling to the mountains, especially Highlands, North Carolina. She also enjoyed meeting with her book club to read and discuss books. Her favorite author was Willa Cather and one of her favorite books was A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote. She shared these special books with her classes year after year just in time for “Fruitcake weather”.

When Sondra retired, she enjoyed doing crafts and making ATC cards. Shopping was always a favorite past time as well. You could find her looking down all of the aisles of Hobby Lobby and she was always game to go to the Yellow Daisy Festival. Recently while living at Phoenix of Braselton, you could find her playing Rummikub or Rubicon/Rubikub as she called it. She loved playing for hours.

Sondra loved all kinds of sports. She would root for the Cornhuskers and the Blue Jays when they were playing. Sondra also had season tickets to the Braves in the nineties, cheering them on at the World Series. While at Berkmar, she was a devoted fan of the Patriot’s basketball team, taking them to the state playoffs.

Although Sondra received many compliments on her fashionable and extensive jewelry collection, it was her smile and contagious personality which shone the brightest. She never met a stranger and was always there to lend a helping hand or listening ear. She touched many lives through her career in education and the friendships she created along her life’s journey. Even as our hearts feel empty, we are filled with the comfort of knowing we will see her again one day. She will be dearly missed.
