Cami Oelsligle

As both a counselor and a coach, Cami Oelsligle ‘16 is grateful for the opportunities she has been given in her time at Humphrey High School.

Cami was recently named the 2023 Elementary School Counselor of the Year by the Nebraska School Counselors Association. She is also in contention to be named the overall School Counselor of the Year by the NSCA, with an announcement to come in February. Cami, who serves as volleyball coach for the Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family squad, also received the American Volleyball Coaches Association 30 Under Thirty award for excellence in coaching.

Cami Oelsligle QuoteShe graduated from Midland University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science as well as earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education with endorsements in math, special education, and coaching. Following graduation, Cami began her time as a counselor and coach with Humphrey Public Schools in the fall of 2016.  “It’s an honor to be recognized for these awards and I’m so proud of reaching my goals of being a happy, successful individual capable and willing to give back to the communities that have given so much to me,” she said.

As a coach, Cami has guided Humphrey/LHF to a pair of state volleyball tournament appearances, including one this past fall. Her 2018 team reached the state championship match before falling to Archbishop Bergan.

She forged her future on the Midland University campus where she was named the 2016 Educator of Year in Secondary Education. The Tilden, Nebraska, native said Midland had a special feel the first time she stepped on campus. “From my first visit, I loved the size, ease of getting around campus, the friendly faces, and the beauty,” she said. “Coming from a small town, I knew I didn’t want to attend a large school. I also wasn’t sure if I was done playing sports, and I had the opportunity to play various sports at Midland. It turns out Midland was the perfect fit for me.”

There are plenty of long-lasting memories for Cami, especially those during her time living on campus. “My fondest memories stem back to living in Augustine Hall my sophomore year,” she said. “My roommate, Emily Ewing, is still my best friend and we had fun doing anything. I loved intramurals and attending sporting events as the teams were very competitive during my time at Midland. It always seemed like there was something to do and so many opportunities to get involved.”

Her time at Midland prepared Cami for her career in education and has given her the confidence to thrive, both in and out of the classroom. “Midland prepared me to problem solve, persevere, gain confidence, and network with professionals who helped me become successful in a position I did not have complete formal education or training,” she said. “Midland’s small class sizes allowed me to build great relationships with my professors and they helped me gain employment, as well as provide insight when needed in my current position.”

When not in school or coaching, Cami likes to spend time involving herself in sports (both playing and watching), outdoor activities, puzzles, and spending time with family and friends.
