Carol M. Shepard '49
Carol M. Shepard, 90, of Frisco, Texas, formerly South Sioux City, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at Baylor Medical Center in Frisco, surrounded by family.
A service in celebration of Carol's life will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, in the chapel at Hillcrest-Westlawn Cemetery in Omaha.
Carol was born in Omaha, on Sept. 13, 1927, to Walter and Myrtle (Andersen) Munson. She attended Omaha schools and graduated from Omaha Tech High School in 1945. She earned her B.A. from Midland College in Fremont, Neb., in 1949. She attended graduate school at Penn State and finished her Master of Arts degree at the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, in 1965.
Carol spent her life in the classroom, teaching for a short time in South Sioux City schools but for most of her career, she taught in Sioux City Public Schools. She was the consummate educator constantly working with her students first in theatre arts, and eventually focusing her efforts on her speech and debate students at Sioux City North High School. Her students were highly successful as they earned state and national honors for their efforts and a few advanced to state and national prominence in government and on the performing stage. She retired from education in 1989 after 40 years of dedication to her many students.
In 1999, she moved to Frisco, Texas, where she lived until her passing. In retirement, she was active in Eastern Star and P.E.O service organizations, and in her church, Rejoice Lutheran in Frisco. She read incessantly but always found time during football season to follow her Nebraska Cornhuskers.
She is survived by her daughters, Marsha Adams and husband, Doug of South Sioux City and Rhonda Sawyer and husband, Tom of Dallas, Texas, and her son, Les and his wife of Texas; her sister-in-law, Bev Munson; and several nieces and nephews. In addition, Carol had four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Walter A. "Bud" Munson Jr.; and her sister, Janet.
Memorial donations can be made in Carol's name to macular degeneration research through their website: support.brightfocus.org.
