Carolyn Burton '53
Carolyn Marie Burton found peace in her heavenly home on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at age 92, surrounded by family at her Red Feather Lakes, Colo. cabin.
She was welcomed by her beloved husband Billy James Burton, her parents Mamie and Sander Ekstand, her sisters Virginia “Ginny” Ekstrand Peterson and Ruth “Ruthie” Ekstrand, her daughter Kristie Kay Burton-Barbieri, her son-in-law, Richard “Rick” Barbieri, her grandson Jason Pistone, and all the family and friends who have gone before her.
Carolyn was born on December 15, 1931, to Mamie and Sander Ekstrand in Omaha, Neb. She graduated from Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing in 1953 and practiced as a Registered Nurse for 36 years. While working and living in Omaha, Carolyn married Billy James Burton and raised three beautiful children. They retired to Red Feather Lakes, Colo. in 1989.
Carolyn’s mother Mamie heard about Red Feather Lakes while listening to her favorite homemaking radio show in Omaha and convinced her husband to visit. He quickly fell in love with the area because it reminded him of his home in Sweden. Carolyn and Bill both volunteered extensively in their small mountain community. Carolyn was active in the Chapel of the Pines for more than 25 years, a church her parents helped found in 1962 so that all denominations could worship together.
Carolyn is survived by her two sons, William “Biff” (Lisa) Burton and Robert (Melonie) Burton, seven grandchildren, Shannon Scarbrough, Lisa Pistone, Sydnie Burton, Russell (Bree) Burton, Rebecca Burton, Coleton Burton and Sarah (Austin) Mickle, and six great-grandchildren, Elijah Scarbrough, Levi Pistone, Jase Pistone, Dana Scarbrough, Madilyn Burton and Oliver Mickle.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a Celebration of Life and Interment at the Chapel in the Pines on Thursday, June 20, at 11 am with a BBQ reception at the family home.
