David Provorse, PhD '82 and Marcia Provorse
Dave and Marcia Provorse rode off into the sunset together on December 20, 2024. David Lee Provorse was born April 09, 1960 to the late Albert Allan Provorse and Dorothy Ladine Provorse (Long) in Fremont, Nebraska. Marcia Lynn Rowley was born April 21, 1962 to the late Bernard Francis Rowley and Claudine Marie Rowley (Summers) in Grand Island, Nebraska. Their love story began as high school sweethearts at Fremont High School and they were inseparable from that moment on. If Dave wasn’t busy with athletics or music and Marcia wasn’t busy trying to keep her brothers out of trouble, they could be found together. They were married in front of 400 of their closest friends and relatives on August 16, 1980. Dave studied psychology at Midland University, and attained a PhD from the University of Nebraska, while Marcia assured their social life was just as full as their academic life, maintaining old relationships and building new ones. To this day, most friends, colleagues, and family members of Marcia’s believe they were her ‘favorite’, and they all were. In 1990, Dave became a psychology professor at Washburn University in Topeka, KS where he taught, mentored, and impacted many lives over the course of 34 years. Marcia was an indispensable office manager at the endodontic practice of Dr. Kerry O’Neal, where she worked for 30 years. They are survived by their beloved daughter, Amanda Marie (Mathew) Strassburg and two grandsons, Jax David and Leo William, whom they adored. Dave and Marcia had large, loving families and are survived by siblings Cindy (Scott) Sindel, Al (Paula) Provorse, Kay (Jeff) Ritz, Cheryl (John) Riskowski, Mike (Marlene) Rowley, Randy (Joyce) Rowley, Brad (Pat) Rowley, Jamie Rowley, Jeremy (Lori) Rowley, and Jeff (Ashlee) Rowley, and many nieces and nephews. Their life adventure had many ups and downs, as they all do, but Dave and Marcia chose to focus on the ups and help their loved ones to do the same. What started with softball games, garage bands and dance recitals grew into marathons, Big Red football, cycling, riding Harleys and countless other activities. Through it all, they had the type of love that was admirable. It was the relationship you dream about having when you grow up. It was truly “a notebook kind of love”. Friends and family were always central to these adventures and everything Dave and Marcia did. No matter what else was going on, they found time to love and support the hundreds of their closest friends, relatives, students, coworkers, and family. Dave and Marcia touched countless lives and will be missed beyond words. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Dave and Marcia, please consider a memorial contribution to Washburn University’s Master’s Degree Psychology Scholarship, a fund they established and deeply valued. Gifts can be mailed to Washburn University Foundation, 1729 SW MacVicar, Topeka 66604, or online at https://www.wualumni.org/g/psychology. They will be honored December 30th at the Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island, NE, beginning with a visitation at 9:30am, service at 10:30am, with a short graveside service at Westlawn Memorial Cemetery and reception at Travelers Taproom to follow, from 12:30-5:00pm. The service will be live-streamed at Peace Lutheran Celebration of Life-Grand Island facebook page.
