Dennis was born to Oscar A. Johnson and Eva L. (Peterson) Johnson on January 4th, 1934, in the house on the farm where they resided and farmed, in Section 35 of Grant Township. He grew up on that farm and later raised his own family there as well, until moving to a farm on the west side of that same section in 1981. Dennis attended country school through sixth grade at the Grant #7 schoolhouse which was also in Section 35 a half mile north of their farm. Upon graduating from high school in Pocahontas in 1952 he attended Luther Junior College in Wahoo, NE. There he earned an Associate Degree in Engineering and also met the girl he would marry. Upon his college graduation in 1954, Dennis worked in California the following winter (where that girl also happened to be) and then returned to the family farm in the spring of 1955. On July 17th, 1955, Dennis and Martha Evonne Smith were married at Bethany Lutheran Church in Duluth, MN. They made their home on the farm south of Pocahontas where they farmed and raised their four children, Steven Mark, Bruce Alan, Cynthia Renae, and Brian Charles. The farming operation included milk cows, chickens, hogs, beef cattle, and row crops. Dennis was also an ACCO Seed salesman for several years. His family attended Trinity Lutheran Church southwest of Pocahontas which was also the church where he was raised. Dennis and Martha remained members there until that church closed and most recently are members of and attend Faith Community Church of rural Palmer. Dennis eventually retired from farming but continued working full-time at Allied Precision Products in Pocahontas repairing and rebuilding tractor parts until a hand injury forced him to quit in 2017 at age 83 having worked there just over 30 years.

Weekly church fellowship and daily devotions were important to Dennis in living out his faith and trust in Jesus which he loved to express by singing. He served many years on various church boards and councils and sang in the choirs. Dennis had an interest in coin collecting and enjoyed outdoor activities one of which was fishing and also just doing what he called “puttering”. He was a member and served as President of the Pocahontas Lions Club and had been a member and served as President on the board of the Palmer Telephone Company. Dennis enjoyed time with his family especially the large holiday gatherings with everyone playing games and cards. Dennis often mentioned he was born, raised, went to school, lived, farmed, and would be buried all in Section 35 of Grant Township. Well done, good and faithful servant!!

Dennis is survived by his wife, Martha; his children: Steve (Joanie) Johnson of Harmony, MN, Bruce Johnson of Holcombe, WI, Cyndi (Nate) Johnson of Shoreview, MN, Brian (Sherre) Johnson of Pocahontas; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and sister, Donalee Aden of Palmer, IA.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Darrel Johnson; and brother-in-law, Duane Aden.
