Donald C. Diers, 88, of Grand Island passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017.
The memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Rev. Dr. Robert M. Lewis will officiate. All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
Donald was born Feb. 16, 1929, in Fremont, the son of Walter and Philomena (Rump) Diers. He grew up on the family farm in Fremont and graduated from Fremont Senior High School. Donald then furthered his education at Midland College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He enlisted in the United States Army in November 1950, serving during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in November 1952. On Nov. 29, 1952, Donald was united in marriage to Virginia L. Johnson. They made their home and raised their family in Grand Island. Donald owned and operated Diers Motor Company.
Donald was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and a 50-year member of the Grand Island Rotary Club. He served on the boards of directors at Lutheran Memorial Hospital, Boy Scouts of America, YMCA, Grand Island Chamber of Commerce, and was past president of Nebraska New Car Dealer Association. He was also a Shriner.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Virginia; two sons, Donald Jr. “Chuck” (Cassandra) Diers of Wichita, Kansas, and Matthew Diers of Vail, Colorado; brother, Charles (Mary Lou) Diers of Fremont; sister, Joan (Jim) Lee of Deforest, Wisconsin; two grandchildren, Justin (Ginger) Diers and Nathan (Amber) Diers; and three great-grandchildren, Brooke, Nathan Jr. and Spencer.
He was preceded in death by both parents; brothers, Dale and Paul; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Wanda Lambourn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
