Duane D. Jones, 90, of Lincoln, Nebraska (formerly rural Osceola) died on May 20, 2025 at Tabitha Good House. Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 2 at Calvary Lutheran Church of Swede Home, rural Stromsburg with Pastor Evan Christensen officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, June 1 from 2 to 4:00 p.m. at Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola. Inurnment will be at Swede Home Cemetery.
Duane was born January 27, 1935 in Osceola, NE to David Edmund and Florence Ellen (Timm) Jones. He attended District 8 and District 47 country schools. Duane graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1952, and Luther College, Wahoo, NE in 1954. He served in the US Army from 1955-1958 in Veterinary Corps Food Inspection in Chicago, IL. While stationed in Chicago, he met his future wife, Carol Bohman. Duane and Carol were married April 19, 1958 in Bridgeport, CT and then returned to the family farm in Polk County, NE where Duane farmed with his father, David, and his son, Mark, until retiring at age 80.
Duane was a fourth generation lifetime member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Swede Home, where he served on the Church Council and as a member of various committees. He was a member of the Osceola School Board from 1976 to 1984, serving 2 terms as President. He was a charter member of the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Producers Association and was appointed by Gov. Charles Thone to the first Grain Sorghum Checkoff Board in 1981 and served nearly 25 years in various offices and committees. From 1982 to his retirement in the mid 90s he was a member of the U.S. Feed Grains Council (now U.S. Grains Council), elected to the Executive Committee in 1982 and proceeded through the chairs serving as Chairman in 1990-91. In 1990, Duane was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Clayton Yeutter to serve on the U.S. Trade and Development Mission to India. During his involvement with the USGC, Duane traveled to over 30 countries promoting corn, grain sorghum and barley. Duane received the following honors: Public Service to Agriculture Award presented by the Nebraska Agribusiness Club, Award for Agricultural Excellence by the National Agri-marketing Association Midlands Chapter; Industry Service Award from the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Producers and membership in the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement.
Duane is survived by his wife, Carol; his children, Beth (Gary) Wienck, Marysville, KS; Mark (Tammy) Jones of rural Osceola, NE, Linnea Jones of Lincoln, NE; Grandchildren, Jennie (Ric) Mandigo, Nate (Amber) Johnson, Tyler (Emily) Jones, Talia (Carson) Frank, Breanna Gettman, and Brooke Gettman. He is also survived by 8 great-grandsons and his sister Carolyn (Evan) Nordstrom, Fremont, NE. In addition, he is survived by 6 nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Tory Jones, brother-in-law Robert Bohman and sister-in-law Paulita Bohman. Memorials to be designated later by family.
