Florence Emma Breitkreutz was born on Feb. 14, 1927, at the family farm northwest of Howells to August and Rose (Zastera) Christ. Florence attended rural School District 29 and graduated from Howells High School in 1944. She began teaching at rural schools in the Clarkson and Howells area at the age of 17 and renewed her teaching certificate at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont. She continued teaching in Stanton and Cuming counties until 1960.

She met Duane Breitkreutz in 1945 at a dance at the Howells Ballroom. They were married on Aug. 2, 1948, in North Platte. Duane and Florence’s marriage of 70 years was blessed with sons Tom and Ken and daughters Nancy, Anne and Carolyn. Adding to their blessings were grandchildren, Katie, Kristin (Ben), Zachary (Katie), Paige, Westin, Tilden and Sutton.

Florence enjoyed polka music, dancing, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. She was an avid gardener and canned everything that can be canned. She was a great cook. If you ever tasted one of her pies, you already know that. She was a devoted farmwife — she could gather the eggs, milk the cows, sort the hogs, transport the kids to and from school, feed a crew of 20 with her famous fried chicken, wash clothes, then milk the cows again, all before 6 p.m. In her spare time, she was an active member of St Joseph’s Catholic Church and the ladies guild.

Grateful for having shared her life are her spouse, Duane; her sons, Tom (Mary) and Ken (Karen); her daughters, Nancy (Mark Wacker), Anne (Roger Nottleman) and Carolyn (Nathan Dixon); a sister, Anna Mae Beran; her sisters-in-law, Burdean Christ, Eileen Breitkreutz, Evelyn (Richard) Smith, Sidonia Breitkreutz, Rita (Larry) Clark and Sharon Lehman; and a brother-in-law, Gerald Priest.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Janet Marie; and her brothers, Doran (Lola) Christ and Harold Christ.
