James Scherer '60
James Scherer was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on January 15th, 1939. He died peacefully on Tuesday, February 21st, 2023.
James spent most of his childhood in California. He loved the mountains and ocean.
The family moved to Fremont, Nebraska where James attended Midland Lutheran College. He was active in tennis, football, track and golf, and won national awards in tennis. After graduating, he worked for Bell Telephone in Omaha, Nebraska. Sports continued with golf and softball. James enjoyed Toastmasters Club and was an active member in Morning Star Lutheran Church. He sang in the choir with his gorgeous bass voice and served as a Stephens Minister.
After retirement, James spent many winters with family in Tucson, Arizona. He was a beloved uncle to all of his nieces and nephews who he loved to spoil with fun gifts and make laugh with his corny jokes. Since there was no snow in the winter, he got boxes for all to slide down the hills.
He made friends everywhere he went, especially adoring all the children. His sense of humor brought smiles to us all. The last few years he spent in Des Moines, Iowa where for the first time since graduation he could be with his siblings and made new friends who became like family at Scottish Rite Park and Central Presbyterian Church.
The family would like to thank Luther Park's dementia unit for their excellent care, finding ways to keep Jim active socially and physically.
In lieu of flowers, please consider contributing to Central Presbyterian Church to feed the hungry and support the homeless.
