Love Story: Our love story began on New Year’s Eve 1975. It was Christmas break of my freshman year at Midland. Having no plans for New Year’s Eve, I decided to go to the Kappa Phi Party with my brothers, who were Kappa Phis. Never in a million years did I imagine that on that very night, I would meet my knight in shining armor, but lo and behold, there he was. In the hustle and bustle of the party, I lost my contact lens. Instantly a tall, blonde, handsome sophomore came to my rescue and asked if he could help. Before I knew it, he found it for me.
When the music and dancing began, Jon asked my friend (now sister-in-law) Cindi Nothwehr if she thought I would dance with him. She said yes, and of course, I owed him a dance for finding my contact! Our first dance continued for several more, and before we knew it, it was midnight and we had our first kiss at the strike of 12:00. Love at first sight? Absolutely! Many years later, he still remembered exactly what I was wearing that night.
We have wonderful memories of strolling around the Midland campus, taking interterm classes together, swimming at the state lakes, going to Phi Omega and Kappa Phi events, polka dances at Weston, and studying together. Jon graduated from Midland with his business degree and I graduated with my degree in education.
We were thrilled when our children Ben Peters ’08 (Laura Skelton Peters ’08) and Jessica Peters Curtice ’11 decided to attend Midland, as well. Perhaps someday some of our 5 beautiful grandchildren will decide Midland is the university for them!
This December 30th Jon and I will celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. My knight in shining armor not only found my contact on that New Year’s Eve night in 1975 . . . he also found my heart!
