Jean Erickson '50
Jean Lucille (Lindgren) Erickson joined her family in Heaven on August 7, 2024. She was born at her Grandma Anna Lindgren’s house in Wahoo, Nebraska on December 14, 1928. She lived with her parents at Walter and Clara (Anderson) Lindgren’s farm northwest of Wahoo as number 5 of 6 siblings of 3 girls and 3 boys.
During her grade school years, she walked 2 miles twice a day to study at District 70, a 2-room schoolhouse. In May of 1946 she graduated from Wahoo High School. She studied for 1 year at Luther College in Wahoo during 1946-47; then studied for 3 years at Immanuel Nursing in Omaha. After graduating with a RN degree in August 1950, she worked at Immanuel Hospital for 1 year, and then 2 years at the Fremont hospital until she married Morris Thure Erickson August 12, 1953 at Edensburg Lutheran Church in Malmo, NE.
Jean Erickson moved to her husband’s farm southwest of Mead, Nebraska where Morris milked Holstein dairy cows and farmed corn, alfalfa, soybeans, and hay. They raised 3 children together: Timothy, Susan and Thomas.
Jean continued her nursing career for 38 ½ years at the Saunders County Hospital in Wahoo, finally retiring in 1994, when she was almost 75 years old.
Music, reading and oil painting were special hobbies. She remembers her family of 8 singing mostly gospel songs in 4-part harmony: at her parents 25th wedding anniversary, at specialty church functions with her sisters, all together at the piano, after meals at the kitchen table, in the car, and on blankets under the summer night skies.
She was active in her high school band and orchestra, the Alma Lutheran Church choir, adult Sunday School, neighborhood ladies Bible Study, Lutheran Ladies Aid (secretary), Double Circle (couples group).
Jean held almost all of the various church volunteer positions such as board member, VBS teacher, and also volunteered with several community organizations including Lutheran Brotherhood, Thrivent, Blood Mobile, etc. throughout the years.
In their later years, Morris and Jean were blessed with travel to Hawaii, Alaska, Sweden and the Caribbean.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Morris; her parents Walter and Clara Lindgren; sisters LaVerne (Elmer) Vermeline, Helen (Richard) Houfek; brothers Duane (Margie) Lindgren, Robert Lindgren and Roger (Janet) Lindgren. Surviving family include her 3 children Timothy, Susan and Thomas Erickson, and daughter-in-law, Julie Erickson; sister-in-law, Maretta Lindgren from Wahoo NE, many other nieces, nephews and friends.
