Marvin Langeland '56

Marvin LangelandBorn on the family farm in Lake Andes, SD, and baptized at West Lake Andes Lutheran Church, Marvin lived a life full of faith and service. During the depression, the family first relocated to Milaca, MN and eventually moved to Salem, Oregon. They were active members at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Salem, and Marvin loved his times at Camp Colton Lutheran Bible Camp. He graduated from Salem High School (now North Salem) in 1952 having been active in football, tennis, choir, playing the french horn and in the local Young Life Chapter. He continued his education by earning a BA degree, Cum Laude, from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, NE in 1956. Feeling called into ministry, he attended Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, CA, spent a year of seminary internship with the Lutheran Church of Hong Kong, served in the U.S. Navy Reserve Chaplaincy Program, and graduated in 1960 with a Master of Divinity degree. In 1970, he completed a MA degree in Communication at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and in 1999, after retiring from parish ministry, he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN.

Marvin was ordained at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Salem, OR and served as pastor at Holy Cross LC in Wheat Ridge, CO 1960-1965, Immanuel LC in Greeley, CO 1966-1981, Faith LC in Little Rock, AR 1982-1986 and Messiah LC in Spokane, WA, 1986-1996.

While in his first parish in Colorado, he met the love of his life, Amy Voss from Rosholt, SD, who was working as an RN in Denver. They were married in 1961 and were faithful partners in life and ministry until her death in 2017, just shy of their 56th anniversary. Their 2 daughters, Elizabeth and Andrea, were born in Colorado. The family spent time together with many church activities, singing together, enjoying the mountains, and taking annual cross-country car trips to visit extended family in the Midwest, California and the Pacific Northwest.

Marv and Amy retired to Salem, OR, where Marv enjoyed working on house and yard projects, woodworking and participating in the ministries of Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. They were fortunate to make two big rail tours across the US and Canada, and Marv reached his goal of visiting all 50 State Capitals, along with numerous National Parks.

In 2018 Marvin moved to Lacey, WA to be close to his daughters. He found a church home at St. Mark Lutheran Church where he enjoyed helping with Fall harvest in the community garden and visiting care homes with the Sunshine Singers. His other interests included photography, history, watching sports on TV, and reminiscing with family and friends. His great passion for life and sharing the Gospel message of love continued up until the very end of his life.

Survivors include daughters Elizabeth and Andrea, both of Lacey, WA; sister Lorraine Hickman of Salem, OR and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Pearl Langeland; wife, Amy Langeland; and brother, Rev. Melvin Langeland.
