Milton E. Holtz, Ph.D., the son of John F. and Wilhelmina (Feyerherm) Holtz, was born April 30, 1935, in Beemer, Nebraska. He attended high school in Beemer, graduating in 1953. Milton received his Bachelor of Science degree in History from Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska, his Master’s degree in History from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska, and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in History from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.
On September 18, 1955, Milton was united in marriage to Alice M. Nitzsche at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Beemer. They are the parents of four children: Russell, Milton Dean, Lisa and Julie.
Milton taught history and economics at all levels of education, finally retiring to farm life after the closing of Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri. Prior to that, he served as President at Nebraska Indian Community College and was a professor at the University of South Dakota/Springfield, in Springfield, South Dakota. While at Springfield, Milton and Alice also owned and operated a dairy farm and row crop operation in South Dakota.
Milton was very active in the Christian faith. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Westboro, Missouri, and a former elder & president of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Springfield. He loved sports (especially Nebraska football), enjoyed playing baseball and softball for many years and also, until a few years ago, refereed football and basketball at the high school and collegiate level. He was a master of Schafkopf and never tired of teaching the finer points of the card game at our family gatherings. Milton passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at his home in Westboro, at the age of 83.
In addition to his parents, Milton was preceded in death by siblings, Irma Bergt, Rosalie Ott, Roland Holtz, Arlin Holtz, Lillian Adkins and Quintin Holtz. Survivors include wife, Alice Holtz, Westboro; four children, Russell Holtz and wife, Nancy, Tacoma, Washington, Milton Dean Holtz and wife, Lyndy, Blanchard, Iowa, Lisa Holtz, Rock Port, Missouri, and Julie Livengood and husband, Dana, Burlington Junction, Missouri; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, John Lee Holtz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M., Monday, January 14, 2019, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Westboro.
Interment: 1:00 P.M., Monday, Walden Grove Cemetery, Westboro
Open visitation begins 10:00 A.M., Sunday, Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, where the family will receive friends from 3:00-4:00 P.M.
