Lawrence C. Becker '61

Lawrence C. Becker, 79, of Roanoke, Va., died on Thursday, November 22, 2018, from a heart attack. He was a graduate of Midland College with a BA in history (1961) and The University of Chicago with a MA and Ph.D. in philosophy (1963; 1965). Larry taught philosophy at Hollins College from 1965 to 1989 and at The College of William and Mary from 1989 to 2001. He edited the journal Ethics for 15 years and published numerous books and essays, including two editions of the Encyclopedia of Ethics (1992; 2001), which he co-edited with his beloved wife of 51 years, Charlotte Burner Becker. Charlotte died on September 18, 2018. Larry is survived by sister, Sharyn Becker Ingram of Des Moines, Iowa; brother, Michael A. Becker of Fremont, Neb.; sister-in-law, Linda Newman Becker of Fremont, Neb.; and brother and sister-in-law to Charlotte, William L. and Sharon T. Burner of Vienna, Va.
