Brett Dickerson '87
Brett and Robin Dickerson (56 and 57 respectively) of Plattsburg, MO, died together in an accident during a motorcycle ride through the Big Horn mountains on July 3rd.
The viewing will be held Saturday, July 17th, from 11am-1pm, with the funeral following at 1pm at the Plattsburgh High School gymnasium. A Celebration of Life will be held after the funeral until 5:30pm at the Community Courtyard.
Brett and Robin met in fall 1984 at a dance at the College of St. Mary’s, when Robin was a student at St. Mary’s, and Brett was at nearby Midland University. Brett would later recall Robin informing him she had two options for herself after she graduated: he was either going to marry her, or she was going to move to Texas to join up with two college friends who had just moved to Galveston. Brett didn’t take much convincing. The two wed just ten months after they first met, on August 9th, 1985.
Robin would graduate with her B.S. in respiratory therapy from St. Mary’s in 1985. She worked in local hospitals in Omaha while Brett finished his bachelor’s in business administration in 1987. From Omaha, the two moved briefly to South Carolina, and then to Durham, North Carolina where Robin taught at Durham Tech Community College. In 1990, the two moved to Kansas City, and the greater metro area would be their home and where they’d raise their family.
While Robin was set on her career path straight out of high school (leaving high school a semester early to move to Omaha to start on her respiratory therapy degree, the field in which she worked her entire career), Brett’s path toward his career in teaching had a longer prelude. Prior to teaching, some of the jobs he held included construction company project manager, golf course manager, cleaning company franchisee, real estate agent, and mayor of Trimble, MO. It wasn’t until after he had spent time at home raising the kids, and after coaching youth baseball reignited his interest in coaching, that he began working toward a career in education. He would graduate with his Master’s in Education from Northwest Missouri State University in 2001, and began his 20 year career at the Plattsburg School District later that year.
Brett and Robin both had many interests, pleasures, and achievments, of which it is impossible to summarize. However, a notable sampling includes: Brett’s long-distance bicycle riding, including riding from Plattsburg, MO to Bufalo, WY (887 miles) in 17 days; world travel, visiting Mexico, China, Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, and Costa Rica together, with Robin also seeing the USSR, England, New Zealand, and Japan apart from Brett; Brett’s love for sports--playing basketball at Midland University, and then coaching almost every sport at various levels, inluding PHS’s recently started esports teams; Robin’s numerous work accolades, including multiple years as the top salesperson in her company, and finishing her career as the Director of Professional and Clinical Education.
They are survived by their three children, Cody, Callie, and Chloe, Robin’s parents, Richard and Norma, Robin’s sister Sharla, Brett’s siblings Darcell and Dennis, and by one nephew and three nieces. They were preceded in death by Brett’s parents Dugal and Bessie, and by their nephews Daniel and Dugal. Their first grandchild is expected in August.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for people to make checks payable to The Brett and Robin Dickerson Memorial Fund. The funds raised will be split evenly between the Plattsburgh High School Tech. Laboratory and PEO, a philanthropic organization that celebrates the advancement of women’s education.
They were best friends until the end, and will be dearly missed.
