Marilyn Langemeier '72
Marilyn Johnson Langemeier was called home to her Lord and Savior on January 5, 2024, at the Lakeside Immanuel Community in Omaha. She was born on May 17, 1943, the youngest of Julius and Vera Johnson's six children. Marilyn was raised in Holdrege until the family moved to Wahoo, NE in 1957 where her parents became the dining hall directors at Luther College.
Marilyn attended Luther Academy for two years before it closed. She graduated from Wahoo High School in 1961. Marilyn then attended Luther Jr. College where she was a member of the last freshman class. When Luther merged with Midland College in Fremont in 1962, Marilyn joined the Midland staff for twelve years as secretary to the dean of students. During this time, she completed her BA degree in behavioral science as a non-traditional student. Following graduation in 1972 she began working for Immanuel Mental Health Center and helped set up and managed the Fremont Mental Health Center for ten years.
Faith, family, and friends was always extremely important to Marilyn. Her early on vacations centered around her fifteen nieces and nephews – her "kids". Sometime between the Wizard of Oz and Mary Poppins, Marilyn became "Auntie M". She was happy being single at 35.
In 1981, Marilyn met her Amore, Leon Langemeier. They were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont after an almost three-year courtship which began with a phone call to Marilyn from a stranger, a few flippant words, and a subsequent blind date. They both truly believed that the Lord brought them together and were very thankful for 38 years of God's blessing in their marriage. While in Fremont, NE Marilyn owned and operated the Gowns by Jeri bridal shop. In 1982, Marilyn moved to Montana where she spent the next 36 years alongside her husband. Marilyn enjoyed her work, loved her family and enjoyed playing golf, cards, gardening, road trips, cruises and remodeling and decorating their homes and the banks in Montana and Wyoming. Marilyn worked as administravite secretary at the Bank of Bridger. She served on the Bank of Bridger Board of Directors, the Alumni Board at Midland College and LCMS Foundation Board. Her dedication to serving others reached many people and homes in the Montana and Wyoming bank communities as well Nebraska and Arizona. Whatever she was doing she did with love and gratitude, sharing a "Marilyn Hug" with everyone. She was humbled and proud to be called "Grandma". She adored her grandchildren from rocking them to sleep to watching them graduate and everything in between. In 2018, Marilyn and Leon followed their deep roots back to Nebraska.
Marilyn was a woman who loved the Lord, believed in His promises and always felt so richly blessed.
Marilyn is survived by twin brothers Gary Johnson and Larry Johnson (Lois), stepchildren, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents Julius and Vera Johnson, husband, Leon Langemeier, brother, Roger Johnson, sisters, Patricia Osborne and Barbara Bartek.
Memorial donations can be made in care of the family for the Luther College Liberal Arts program at Midland University. Visitation will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 11th at Trinity Lutheran Church Fremont, NE. The funeral will follow at 11:00 am.
