Maurece Shirley Johnson was born at home in Ceresco, Nebraska to David T. and Orrie Wedberg Johnson on March 5, 1926. She graduated from Ceresco High School and attended Luther College in Wahoo, Nebraska, for two years. She graduated in 1947 from University of Nebraska in Lincoln with a teaching degree in Mathematics and a minor in Spanish. Maurece married Leon Engelbart on August 9th the same year and moved to Ainsworth, Nebraska, where they both began their teaching careers.
In 1951 Maurece and Leon moved to Omaha and started their family. Maurece later taught and substituted in the Westside School District. In 1971, Maurece and Leon moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, where Maurece taught at Fairfield Junior School. In 1976 they made their home in Norfolk, Nebraska and retired there years later. Maurece was involved in organizations such as Garden Club, Questors, Meals on Wheels, and church organizations. After losing her husband in 2008, Maurece moved to Lakeside Retirement Village in Omaha and eventually resided in Brookstone Village.
Maurece was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Kathleen Swanson; and brother, Jim Johnson. She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Kristy and Maury Damkroger, Kelli and Eric Rolfsmeyer, and Pam and Kirk Engelbart; seven grandchildren and their partners: Andy Damkroger (Jaime), Alison Damkroger (Nate), Libby Johnson (Andrew), Emily Carver (Todd), Kate Sutton (Adam), Grant Engelbart (Jessica), and Brett Engelbart (Nicole); thirteen great-grandchildren.
