Alumni Spotlight: Jim Carbaugh ‘85
In his career as an educator, coach, speaker, and CEO, Jim Carbaugh has always leaned on what he learned as a student-athlete at Midland University.
“Graduating from Midland University solidified my academic foundation while enhancing my interpersonal skills and work ethic. Participating in football provided me with a multifaceted education that uniquely prepared me for life’s challenges. Beyond the classroom, football instilled in me discipline, teamwork, and resilience - qualities essential for success in any endeavor.”
Following graduation from Midland, Jim embarked on a 35-year career in education, 18 of those as a teacher/coach and 17 more in an administrative role. “I helped turn around two football programs, as well as a track program. I also had the opportunity to create a positive atmosphere in the classroom and schools I was a part of. “
In his current role as CEO/owner of All Points Leadership, Jim is able to share his knowledge with others through Tedx talks. He is also working as a contributor/co-author for a leadership book and is in the process of having his own novel published this summer. He has also served as a John Maxwell Certified Team Member for the past four years.
A Pennsylvania native (now living back in his home state), Jim arrived on the Midland campus in 1980 and felt an immediate connection with the university, and Fremont. “The community helped me decide on Midland, and that’s why I stayed. Whether it was academics, football, or in the dorms, there was a vast sense of community at all times. Everyone looked out for each other. The time spent with teammates, both on and off the field, is at the top of my list of memories.”
Jim returned to the Midland campus about a year ago and felt the same rapport he had experienced more than 40 years earlier. “I was greeted with the same enthusiasm as I was when I first visited campus in 1980. The community was still alive and well at Midland. It was a great experience, one I would do all over again.”
In his spare time, Jim enjoys being outdoors, hunting, fishing, physical fitness, and reading.
