Roger Thompson’s decision to change his major to accounting after his sophomore year at Midland University turned out to be a life-changing decision.
“I had a heavy academic schedule at Midland due to changing majors after my sophomore year. I was fortunate to be guided by professors like Gerald Harnisch and Mick Shadboldt.”
His switch to accounting led to a 41-year career as a CPA with Seim Johnson in Omaha. “I started with the firm following graduation in 1981 and stayed with them for 41 years. I had the opportunity to mentor and work with exceptional people and serve mission-driven healthcare, senior services, social services, and foundation organizations.”
Roger familiarized himself with Midland during his high school years when his church, Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church, would host retreats on the Midland campus. While his studies dominated much of his time at Midland, he was able to be part of the Kappa Phi fraternity, as well as serving as co-chair of a new student orientation committee his junior and senior years.
In retirement, Roger enjoys being a grandparent, tennis, exercising, pickleball, traveling, and spending time on the golf course. “I currently have five holes-in-one and an Albatros (double eagle), and I am not a particularly skilled player. My wife also has three holes-in-one.”
He and his wife, Karen, recently traveled to Tanzania with the Nebraska Synod of the ELCA, which Roger referred to as “a life-changing experience.”
Although he had a lengthy career in the accounting world, his greatest joy comes in his family, which includes Karen, two children, and four grandchildren. “My professional accomplishments pale in comparison to others. I am most proud of being married to my best friend and the love of my life, and being a father and grandfather.”
