Monica (Brumfield) Wells learned leadership skills during her time at Midland University that have remained with her today.
Monica is the Director of Strategic Initiatives for the Learning Community of Douglas and Sarpy Counties. In her role, she helps build strategic partnerships, lead community initiatives, secure grant funding, and work alongside educators, families, nonprofits, and community leaders to improve outcomes for children and families.
“When I reflect on my journey, I can clearly see the foundation Midland helped build. It taught me that leadership isn’t about titles, it’s about serving others, building genuine relationships, and having the courage to step forward when an opportunity to make a difference presents itself. The experiences I had on campus gave me the confidence to find my voice, embrace new challenges, and lead with authenticity.”
Two of her passions, cheerleading and theater, brought her to Midland and helped her discover who she was along her journey. She immersed herself into campus life in a number of ways, both in and out of the classroom. She served as vice president of Student Senate, was captain of the cheer squad, president of the African People’s Association for Cultural Unity, and was also selected as Homecoming queen.
“Midland gave me countless opportunities to grow beyond the classroom and challenged me to lead in different ways. While I majored in Science, it was the combination of academics, leadership, service, and campus involvement that truly prepared me for the work I do today.
“Professionally, I am proud of the work I’ve been able to do in strengthening partnerships, advocating for children and families, and helping create opportunities that have a lasting impact.”
Personally, Monica says her greatest accomplishment is being a mom to her daughter, Lalah. “Watching her grow into a compassionate, confident, and thoughtful young woman has been my life’s greatest joy and purpose.”
She also serves as a Deacon at her church and serves on a variety of community boards and organizations, helping to make Omaha a stronger place for everyone.
In her spare time, she enjoys a good book, traveling, discovering new coffee shops, and spending time with the important people in her life.
Whether as a mom, volunteer, or community leader, Monica is grateful for the skills and knowledge she gained during her time at Midland.
“What I enjoyed most about being at Midland was being encouraged to step into opportunities I never imagined for myself. Midland saw potential in me, and because of that I left not only with a degree, but with the confidence to lead, serve, and make a difference in my community.
“When I look back, the accomplishments that mean the most aren’t the titles I’ve held, or the recognition I’ve received, it’s the lives I’ve been privileged to touch, the relationships I’ve built, and the opportunity to serve others with purpose and compassion.”
