Alumni Spotlight: Q&A with Renen Sahr '16
What year did you graduate and what was your major?
I graduated in May of 2016 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration, Concentration in Accounting.
What are you doing now and where?
I am a Financial Advisor at First State Bank & Trust Co. In Fremont, NE.
How did your experience at Midland prepare you for your career?
I learned how to manage my time and work well with others. I also met many awesome people through various groups and clubs that I was involved in while at Midland. The people I have met and the friends I have made have helped me tremendously.
Did a particular faculty member leave a lasting impression on you?
Jon Moxness was my accounting professor all 4 years and as a result, we spent a lot of class time together. A few of his classes were quite difficult Junior/Senior year but he always provided us with an opportunity to succeed. Jon was always very understanding and flexible when it came to athletics and the difficult schedule we had during the golf seasons. I may not be a CPA or in the accounting profession, but I still use many things that I learned in his classes.
What is your fondest memory of Midland?
We as a golf team, had the pleasure of traveling to so many great places and golf courses. Specifically, we always took a trip to Whistling Straights in WI. If you aren’t familiar with the course, it is a beautiful links style layout on the coast of lake Michigan. Unfortunately, we always played there in October and as one would expect, it was always extremely cold. I will never forget how hard that place was to play in the middle of October. I was also a member of PBL and was able to attend a leadership conference my sophomore year. We had a very good group and we all got along very well. We met lots of new people and made tons of good memories on that trip. At this event, two of my good friends and I were responsible for developing a solution to a random problem given to us. We then had ten minutes to create a presentation for the judges. I would assume we were very close to last place when it was all said and done. I hope we have improved our presentation skills since. The three of us still talk about that stressful ten minutes to this day.
How do you spend your leisure time? Any hobbies?
I spend my leisure time playing golf and enjoying the lake in the summer. When the weather isn’t conducive to outdoor activity, I enjoy playing basketball, working out and climbing.
List any family information you would like to include.
My dad Rodney and mom Janelle are currently enjoying the retired life while my little sister, Hali is finishing up her Junior year at UNL. All of us are in the area so we get together often, which I enjoy.
How do you stay connected to Midland?
I have had the opportunity to speak to a few different classes about my career path and the opportunities in my field. A colleague and I gave a financial literacy presentation to a psychology class earlier this year. I also attend events that are hosted by Midland and I usually attend the Midland career fairs. I will continue to do so as long as I can.
Fun or interesting fact about you:
I was homeschooled until 6th grade.
