Doris H. Keairnes, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and affectionately known as “Grandma Doris,” passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Doris was born in Omaha on Oct. 29, 1924, to Emil and Elsine Hertz.

Doris grew up in Omaha, graduating from Benson High School. Doris earned her Registered Nurse degree from Immanuel Hospital. While proudly serving as a nurse, she met a handsome lab technician. The envy of her fellow nurses, she married Richard (Dick) Keairnes on March 20, 1948. Doris and Dick were blessed with three boys: Mark, Bruce, and Scot. Settling in Fremont in 1959, Doris was a stay-at-home mom. She was a dedicated mother to her pride and joy, her boys. Having the task of helping with homework, baking, taking care of their home, and keeping the boys in line while Dick traveled for work. Doris loved to sew, play bridge, and volunteer with the Ladies Circle at First Lutheran Church, where she and Dick were life-long members. When the boys graduated from high school, Doris took up golf, where she played in a standing foursome.

With a loving heart, she welcomed three daughters-in-law to the family and began visiting her children in Texas and Iowa. Soon grandchildren arrived, and her passion became spending time with the growing families. She always arrived with pans of homemade cinnamon rolls, Spritz cookies, Frikadelle, and gifts. Her time asking questions about their lives, playing cards, bedtime stories and hugs in the morning, along with her funny sense of humor, are heartfelt memories. Doris loved shopping with her daughters-in-law and catching up on their lives and the families.

Doris’ greatest loves were her husband, her church, and her family. All will greatly miss her.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister, Irma Haldeman; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Keairnes. She is survived by: sisters, Herdis Dodds, Esther Lundgren; her beloved children, Mark (Sarah), Des Moines, Iowa, Bruce (Diana) Ft. Collins, Co, and Scot, (Jeannine), San Antonio. Her treasured grandchildren: Erik Keairnes (Chandra), Katie Keairnes, Erin Keairnes, Stacy Casady (Nick), Drew Keairnes (Samantha), Ryan Keairnes (Christina), Sam Keairnes, and Peter Keairnes. Cherished great-grandchildren: Hudson Casady, James Casady, Gemma Casady, Carson Keairnes, Elliot Keairnes, and one due in October.

There will be a family graveside service June 9 in Fremont. Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church, Fremont.
