Services for Tommy Lee Benson, 77, Norfolk, will be at a later date.
He died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, at Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove.
Tommy was born Jan. 10, 1941, in Kearney to Elton and Bernice (Needham) Benson. He graduated from Norfolk High School in 1958. Tommy attended Midland College in Fremont on a golf scholarship and Wayne State College in Wayne.
Tommy entered the U.S. Navy on May 6, 1964, and was honorably discharged on May 3, 1968. Tommy worked for Gulf Oil in California after his discharge before returning to Norfolk.
He married Carol Muller in 1977 in Norfolk.
Tommy returned to Norfolk and tended bar for a while. He became an avid follower of sports and loved to play pool and golf.
Tommy worked at the Norfolk Country Club and Indian Trails Country Club in Beemer. Later in life, Tommy attended trucking classes at Northeast Community College and drove truck from the East Coast to the West Coast. He retired in 2003.
Tommy was a member of the Elks Club and a lifetime member of the VFW.
Tommy is survived by Carol; their son, Torey Benson, and daughter Brooke Benson of Norfolk; his stepdaughters, Robin (Rich) Pospisil of Norfolk and Diane Jones of Florida; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Gary (Maryann) Benson of Battle Creek; and a sister, Cheryl (Rick) Fillmer of Newton, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bill Benson of Omaha.
