Vern Hoge, 84, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Thursday, October 18, 2018, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island Nebraska.
The funeral service will be at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, October 23, at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus, with Rev. Michael Klatt and Rev. Cory Burma officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and will continue on Tuesday from 12:30 PM until service time at the church. There will be family prayer service at the church at 1:15 PM. Private family interment will be held at a later date in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery near Scribner, Nebraska. Memorials may be directed to Peace Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
Vern L. Hoge was born September 4, 1934, on a farm near Snyder, Nebraska, in Dodge County, to Frank and Andelheidt (Fullner) Hoge. He attended District 25 Grade School, graduated from Snyder High School, and attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska, for one year. On November 5, 1956, Vern entered the United States Army, serving two years in active duty, and four years in the Army Reserves. He was honorably discharged on November 30, 1962.
On January 13, 1963, Vern was united in marriage to Myrene Toelle at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Beemer, Nebraska. The couple farmed near Scribner, Nebraska, until 1976 when they moved to Ord, Nebraska, where they ran Hoge’s Drive-In Liquor Store for 22 years. Upon his retirement in 1997, they moved to Columbus, Nebraska. Vern was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus, enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, farming, woodworking, and watching the Cubs and Nebraska Cornhuskers football. He was a member of the Snyder VFW.
