Nurses Recall Years of Helping Deliver Babies

Toni (Zahm) Dean remembers when a dad got to be part of his child’s birth — even though he was thousands of miles away.

At the time, the dad was serving his country in the Middle East. The man was getting ready for bed when he checked in with his wife.

“With Skype, he was able to watch the delivery and give her emotional support – and to see the baby,” said Dean, an obstetrics nurse at Methodist Fremont Health. “When I was giving the baby a bath, I put the computer in the room so he could watch the baby’s first bath. He was asking me questions like every new dad would. That was really special.”

Obstetrics nurse Theresa (Fricke) Bilava likes to have a little fun with parents who haven’t come up with a name for their baby.

She and Dean tell parents they’ll name the infant — and then come up with some silly name and put the card on the child’s crib. And Bilava always has another suggestion.

“I always tease them that if they haven’t come up with a name – and it’s a girl—that ‘Theresa’ is wide open,” she said, grinning. “I did have a couple from Prague who named their baby, Theresa Ann, and so I had to buy that baby a gift.”
