Peter Henry “Hank” Nissen died peacefully in Omaha, Neb., on Monday, Sept. 24, at the age of 92 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. 

Visitation: 10-11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, at Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley.

Memorial Service: 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, Hennessey Funeral Home, Missouri Valley.

Officiating: Pastor Jean McCartney.

Organist: Carole Gorham.

Peter Henry Nissen was born on June 29, 1926, in North Bend, Neb., to Adolf and Annie Nissen. Hank graduated from North Bend High School, Midland College, and the University of Nebraska Omaha with degrees in secondary education, counseling, and educational administration.

Henry served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946 as an amphibious landing vehicle instructor. He continued his service in the U.S. Naval Reserve for 10 years.

Henry married Margaret McKay in 1949. They welcomed two children into their lives. Gary Lee was born July 7, 1950, and Nancy Marie was born July 12, 1954. Henry is the grandfather to Eric Nissen, Nicole Gnam, and Michael Fringer, and great-grandparent to Alec Nissen, Braedon Nissen, Kendall Nissen, Malachi Gnam, and Kalvin Gnam.

Henry worked in Stanton, Neb.; Walnut; and Missouri Valley as a math teacher, coach, and counselor. He also worked as a high school and college official in basketball, football, and track. He was often selected as a state tournament official and supervisor.

Hank was inducted into the Midland College Athletics Hall of Fame and Iowa Boys High School Officials Hall of Fame.

Hank was an active and dedicated member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Missouri Valley and often volunteered at the Rand Community Center and Meals-On-Wheels.

Hank is preceded in death by his wives, Margaret Nissen and Patricia Nissen, and his brothers, Walter, Bernard, and Edward.

He is survived by his children, Nancy Fringer, and her husband, David, of Omaha, Neb., and Gary Nissen of Mauston, Wis.; siblings, Joan Werblow of Omaha, Neb., and Rich Nissen of Atlantic; and his longtime companion, Carmen Bohlsen, of Omaha, Neb.
