Stan Sass '56
Stanley Sass was born April 28, 1930, to Theodore and Edith Sass. He married Twila M. Larson on September 29, 1951.
Stanley graduated from Elkhorn High School in 1948 and from Midland College in 1956. He worked for newspapers in Minden and Hastings before joining the staff at Midland where he worked 19 years in various public relations positions. He later received an alumni achievement award for his work at Midland. He worked for 20 years at Immanuel Medical Center, Omaha, in public relations and was responsible for initiating Agewell, a senior wellness program, and, along with his wife, Twila, for initiating the Immanuel Auxiliary Hospitality House on the Immanuel campus.
He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis for many years and served as president for two different terms, one as a distinguished president. Stanely served for four years in the United States Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. He earned the Navy good Conduct, National Defense Service, and United Nations Service medals for his work as a Second-Class Petty Officer during two years overseas. He also received a Meritorious Mast from his commanding officer for his service as a radioman on board the U.S.S. Colonial (LSD-18). He is a member of the American Legion.
He was a member of both the Lincoln and Greater Omaha Iris Societies and received numerous prizes for his Iris he showed at events of those organizations. He was also an active photographer winning several awards at State Fair, Fremont Art Association and American Iris Society events.
He was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Fremont
He is survived by his wife Twila, daughter Sally Thomsen and Husband, David, of Lincoln, grand children Scott Thomsen, wife, Elizabeth and Sarah Thomsen of Lincoln, great grandsons Logan and Dean Thomsen of Lincoln, sister-in-law Bonnie Larson, four nephews, five nieces, and several grand nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by parents, brother, Ted (Jean) Sass, sisters, Cecelia Risinger and Edith (James) O’Malley, in-laws, Peggy and Robert Templin, and Merrill “Skinny” Larson.
Services will be May 10, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Fremont, NE with visitation 1 hour prior Inurnment immediately following at Fremont Memorial Cemetery, Fremont, NE.
