Summary of the Immanuel-Midland Nursing Alumni Association Annual Business Meeting April 9, 2022

The Immanuel-Midland Nursing Association met for their annual business meeting on April 9, 2022.

Sixty members of the Alumni Association were present.

A recap of the Association’s happenings since the last meeting in April, 2019:

  1.  Since 2017, $10,000 has been donated to the simulation lab located at Methodist Fremont Health.
  2. Six junior nursing students were selected to receive $500 scholarships each in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
  3. Distributed small goodie bags to each of the nursing students during the fall semesters in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
  4. Represented the Association at the annual commitment ceremony for sophomore nursing students where each were given a prayer journal.
  5. Represented the Association at the pinning ceremony for the nursing graduates where each graduate received a rose and a complimentary membership to the Alumni Association for one year.
  6. A blooming geranium plant was given to each nursing faculty member during Nurses’ Week in 2021 as an appreciation for their work during stressful pandemic time.
  7. Due to the pandemic no reunion was held in 2020 but a virtual nursing reunion was conducted in 2021.

The proposed amendments and revisions to the Alumni Association Constitution and ByLaws were approved.  They are posted on the Nursing Alumni link on the web page at alumni.midlandu.edu.

The Executive Board of the Alumni Association were elected as follows: 

  • One year terms: Carol Bohling, Jan Madsen, Sherri Adams
  • Two year terms: Joan Wellensiek, Shelli Panning, Jan Ostransky

An Honorary Membership was bestowed upon Dr. Nancy Harms.  Dr. Harms retired as the chair of Midland Lutheran College’s Nursing Department in 2007 after 27 years of dedicated service. 

Dr. Harms served as chair of the nursing department from 1987 to 2007 and then again as an interim co-chair in 2009-2010.  Prior to those positions at Midland Lutheran College, she was an instructor at Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing.  Both a leader and educator, Dr. Harms is credited with establishing Midland’s RN to BSN program and continues to fund nursing education through the Harms-Wehrbein Nursing Scholarship. 

The Alumni Association will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025.  A celebration will be planned.
