The values that were instilled upon Summer Colgrove (Smejkal), ’19, during her time at Midland University have remained with her throughout her professional career and personal life.
Summer works as an Oncology Infusion Registered Nurse at Nebraska Cancer Specialists and is applying the skills she gained at Midland in working with patients and their families through what can be very challenging times.
“Whether it’s administering treatment, offering reassurance, celebrating small victories, or simply being there to listen, I strive to make my patients feel supported and cared for throughout their cancer journey. My time at Midland helped me develop the confidence, discipline, and teamwork skills that I carry with me in my profession. Being part of a close-knit community taught me the importance of connection, compassion, and showing up for others when they need it most. Those lessons continue to shape the nurse I am today, and I’m so grateful for the foundation Midland gave me both personally and professionally.”
It was those same ideals that brought Summer to Midland from her hometown of Columbus, Nebraska.
“Midland has a family-like atmosphere where I felt I could build meaningful relationships and truly be part of the community. I loved the small campus because it felt welcoming and allowed me to connect with both students and professors. It felt like a place where I could grow academically, personally, and as a member of a team.”
Summer was part of the Dance team while at Midland and that experience provided her with some of her fondest memories.
“There were little moments that made college so special, from being part of the Dance team to spending time with friends and making connections that I still have today. Midland felt like a family, where you were more than just a student and always had a sense of belonging.”
Midland also provided the opportunity for Summer to meet her future husband (Tristan) ’19. The couple have a 2-year old daughter (Ellie).
Summer has been able to balance both a family and a career, and is grateful for everything she has been able to accomplish in her journey.
“One of my proudest accomplishments is becoming an oncology nurse and being able to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families during some of their hardest moments. I’m proud to be part of a team that not only provides treatment, but also comfort, encouragement, and support throughout the cancer journey. I’m also proud of the life I’ve built as a wife, mom, and nurse, balancing the many roles that are important to me. I’m grateful for the experiences and relationships that have shaped me into the person I am today.”
